The smoke stream with just a plain background is a wallpaper for my phone. I started playing with the effects on the picture with an app on my phone. I can across rainbow and decided to kind of make a gay pride poster. It was fun to make.

I was in Union square in the city and this lady posed as a statue. She would stand as still as she could until someone would put money in her vase. As soon as they did she moved and, most the time, scared the person. (LOL fun to watch) She was dressed in a gown and painted from head to toe in colors the emulate a statue. It reminded me of back in the day around the 1890’s. I took a picture and fixed it to make it look like it was taken and developed in those times.

I saw this status and really took to it. The color was black but I wanted to make it look like it was a precious antique. I played around with the picture and got the color and feel that I was looking for. Then I thought something so valuable should not be able to be viewed by everything. So I made it seem like the only way one was able to see this antique was to look through a lens.

I loooooooooooove NY!!! Took this picture in the city. If I stood in the middle of the street I could see all the way down the ave. I wanted to capture that, but you know rush hour and taxis AND was not trying to get hit by a car. I think I will try again to get that picture but at night. I think it would be soo beautiful with all the lights and less cars. Look for it soon 🙂

Some people might not know but I also make jewelry. I have not made a piece in a while but I was going through my material and got inspired. What inspired me? These Native American beads, stones and carvings that my grandma gave to me. I am part Native American from the Shinnecock tribe. My grandma saw that I was really getting into the jewelry making and thought I should have a piece of my heritage incorporated into my work. These materials mean a lot to my grandma so the piece that I make with these beads, stones, and carvings I will but into a collection called “Roxanne.”

I took this picture while waiting for the L train to go home. As I was waiting, all of a sudden these birds just started flying all around station. At first there were a few. Then you would see a few more join them. Then a few more until you see a swarm of birds. They would fly in figure eights. Some would fly off then join the pack again. It looked like a dance. Honestly I was kind of mesmerized by it, so I took some pictures. As I was looking at the pictures, the movie “The Crow” came to my head. I manipulated the picture until I felt the essence of the movie.

This is one version of my assignment for my Graphic Design 1 class. We had to take a font and replicate it with our name. The top is printed from the computer and the bottom is the hand sketched replica I did. The font I choose to use for my name plate assignment was “Juice ITC.” As soon as I saw this font I knew it was what I wanted to replicate. It is fun but yet formal at the same time. You can see the human personality in the font. It reminded me of myself. I have a bubbly personality but when it is time to be serious I am. Also certain aspects of the font reminded me of how I use to write in high school. For example, I use to make the big circles over my “I” just as the Juice font does. I felt that this font would be a challenge but yet still in my comfort zone. Not like some of the other fun fonts, all the ascenders and descenders lined up on the same level. The challenging part was to stay focused on the fact that the lower case characters exceeded the meanline. This is something I am not use and in some of my drafts you can see my mind interpreting the font to what I normally see. Over all I loved this assignment. At first I honestly did not think I would be able to recreate any font. I surprised myself. Now I know that even if I do not think I am capable of something, it does not hurt to try. You might just continue to surprise yourself.

Jacob Cass

Jacob Cass is the founder of ‘Just Creative Design’ and a well known blogger. He holds a Bachelor of Visual Communication (Graphic Design Major) from The University of Newcastle, Sydney, Australia. Starting at the young age of 16, Jacob gained a multitude of experience.

Before entering into the work force, Jacob propelled himself forward to learn more and be the leader of the pack. He was active in graphic design forums, read design and freelancing blogs, borrowed and brought books, ask questions and got out there.  He would go to local design studio and ask for work experience. He worked on all their pro bono jobs; it was a great experience for him and learned more about clients and time management.

In January 2010, Jacob moved from Sydney, Australia to New York City to begin full time work at Carrot Creative, a new media marketing agency specializing in media strategy, design & development. He had the opportunity to work with some of the world’s most vaunted brands; Disney, Nike, Red Bull, Coach just to name a few. While working full time, he would do freelance designs on the side. He did a lot of freelance and blog work on weeknights (mainly Mon, Tues, Wed nights) which left the weekends more open but there were a few weekends that he had to work to finish a project. With everything going on in his work life, Cass liked to keep things very simple, no calendars, just a simple to do list using Gmail’s Tasks function. He find that he get things done this way.

For unknown reasons Cass left Carrot Creative after sixth month. Jacob then moved on to working months at a time with numerous companies such as The Wonder Factory, Alexander Interactive and then onto OpenSky. Now working at Ammirati as an Interactive Designer, He still takes on his own personal freelance clients.

With his entire freelance, blogging and work experience, Jacob has become a self-employed graphic designer. Still working at Ammirati, he created a personal graphic design portfolio where he can showcase is work and obtain more clients. Just Creative Design is a growing graphic design company serving unique people and businesses across the world. Based in New York City (though founded in Sydney, Australia), JCD specializes in areas such as logo design, corporate identity design, branding, web design, print design (ie. letterhead, business cards, posters, CD covers, book covers, etc.) and also dwell into many other areas such as photography and art.

To get his name and company out to the world, Jacob takes on the tools of social media. He approached it by providing links, resources & tid-bits of information that helps others. Also by getting a bit more personal, so people would get to know him better rather than just being another avatar. His blog has brought him higher search engine rankings and it has put his name out there in the design community which in turn means more visibility. He says his work is 40% local, 10% national and 50% international, which shows just how varied the work is.

5 Years Today

5 Years Today : Rare interview with multimedia star Crystal Williamson.

by Helen Shaw

I had the rare opportunity to have an interview with Brooklyns’ own multimedia designer, CEO of Love Crystal Designs, Crystal Williamson. She has brought her company up from a one man army to a full national wide cooperation. Her hopes are high and her dreams are big. She is well on her way to becoming the number one go to designer.

How did you know you wanted to be in the field of multimedia?

I never knew what field I wanted to make a career in. All my life I have been that visual creative person. Anything that required me to create, I excelled in. Since visually constructing anything was so easy for me I never saw it as a career but instead as just a hobby. It wasn’t until I stopped going to school that I realized where I needed to be. I was going to school just to go because it was expected of me to attend.

During my time of I really analyzed myself. Then I started looking into advertising, video editing, graphics, etc and realized that a field in multimedia was my destiny. I attended York College, graduated with a Bachelors in Communication Technology and the rest is history.

What are some of your motivations, inspirations, what gets your creative juices flowing?

Anything gets me going. I can see art everywhere. It all depends on the project I am working on. If it is something personal, the final product would reflect my mood at the moment or an event that happened during that time. Like with my creature project, I wanted to show that there is a balance of good and evil in your individual world but you have to be the one that controls it.

If it is a project for a client, I try to get as deep inside their head as I possibly can so that they have exactly what they envisioned but just did not know how to create. Like with the “Road to Dorothy” video She wanted something to showcased her and her work in the fashion industry.

Which project did you enjoy working on the most?

I enjoy working on all my projects. Yes it can be stressful and yes I want to pull out my hair sometimes but I am passionate about my work. At the end of the day, I never look back and ask “why am I doing with?” I ask “What is next?” But I did enjoy working on a video project with my 4 year old niece. She just reminded me how much I miss being a kid. How easier it was. How the littlest things make kids smile. As we get older, that smile sometimes gets harder and harder to make.  I look at the video and it puts a smile back on my face.[vimeo]http://vimeo.com/21177707[/vimeo]

5 years ago, did you expect to become this house hold name in the multimedia industry?

No, I did not expect to see myself where I am now 5 years ago. I mean I knew I wanted to make a name for myself, I just did not think it would happen so fast. I figured it would have taken more time then it did. I am grateful that it did happen. That people see my work and want to get to know me and want to associate their name or company with mine. It was and still is a big adjustment. I have a great team and I could not have done it without them. I enjoy every minute of my career and wouldn’t ask for anything else.
